New Orleans Resource Reveiw- Mes Amis Quilt Shop
While our fellow crafters to the North are preparing for frosty Autumn weather, the heat is persistent here in New Orleans. With temperatures well above 80 degrees it's difficult to think about all those handmade Christmas presents I want to give. I fought the urge to lay out in the park drinking Margarita Daiquiris and made the trek from Uptown to the Lake-view Area to visit Mes Amis Quilting Shop. At some point it will get cooler, and I'm thinking a handmade quilt might be just the thing to give my husband this year.
Mes Amis Quilt Shop is a cozy space with a lot of selection of mid range designer quilting fabrics and all the tools you need to quilt. MODA, Amy Butler, Michael Miller and other well known brands are available and they also have a space for customers to come in a receive help with projects. I'm not sure if they offer lessons- I couldn't find any information in the store but there did seem to be some sort of teaching going on between one of the employees and some ladies at sewing machines.
As much as I love the selection they offer, there are two things that would make me think twice about patronizing this shop. But you can decide how much the following factors matter to you. First is the location which is, well off the beaten path. It's located in this tucked away business complex, and I would have never found it if I didn't have my GPS. From my Uptown home it took me 30 mins to get out to the shop- that's with light to moderate traffic. It's more convenient to go to one of the larger chain shops like Joanne's Fabrics. But Joanne's doesn't sell some of the items Des Amis offers.
Second, and most important to me, in the 10 + mins I was in the store not one of the 3 people working there said hello or even acknowledged me in any way. There were other customers, but it's really important to me to feel welcomed in an independently owned shop, even if it's just a quick," Hello, let us know if we can help you out." For this reason I'll think twice before sending a newbie out this way, I would want them to be taken care of and made to feel comfortable and that they won't be left to fend for themselves.
When I shop a big box chain store I have lower expectations for customer service so that's why I was so disappointed to not find good customer service here. Overall, I think this is a fun little spot to get out to when I'm looking for those designer quilting fabrics or the occasional handmade gift.
